About This Project

The first shapes of these sculptures are made directly in the quarry in the process of extracting the blocks from the mountain. The character of the stone is crucial for this motif. The diabase, called the ”the black gold” is a subvolcanic rock. It is the result of magma flowing up through narrow ruptures in the crust. This stone is known for it’s hard quality and high density. The name comes from Greek ’diabainein’, meaning to penetrate, go through. It is a material with a raw expression that stands in contrast to the motif.
